Take That are back on tour to the delight of their fans and just before kicking off in Sunderland they presented a tough challenge to us: make 5 video capable LED stage costumes in record time for the first performance. No sane person would take such a project on, but we do like the odd 72h shift and assembled a dream team of engineers, product designers and fashion specialists and got to work.

This turnaround time was only possible thanks to a technology that we have developed for quite some time now: a video capable full colour LED pixel especially designed for wearable applications. Together with a new miniature video player this is the wearable technology that the electronic fashion community has been waiting for for decades: a durable, practical solution for video fashion that can be applied to any textile surface.

A big thank you goes out to Take That and their team and to James Long, this collaboration was truly delightful and the result is a significant step forward in the history of fashion technology.

Studio Waldemeyer helped Dom Perignon take a giant step into the future with a sparkling martial art extravaganza at the launch of Dom Perignon's Luminous label. Three of the worlds top female martial art performers - Selina Lo, Cecily Fay and Lizzie Gough - performed a highly innovative mix of contemporary dance and martial arts choreographed by Adam Rae using a set of custom made LED swords in Dom Perignon green. The performance took place in the dramatic setting of One Mayfair and was followed by a set of Swedish House Mafia DJ Steve Angello. Dover Street Market is currently hosting our new interactive project, a collaboration with jewellery designer Hannah Martin, to showcase her new collection "The man who knows everything". The jewellery and the installation are inspired by the mysterious character of an alchemist who appears at different points in time and space. The mystery is reflected in the materials and the design language, bridging ancient past with sci-fi, terrestrial with alien. The polished column is made from black Corian, perfect for this sculpture thanks to its rich finish and seamless construction.

The obelisk is surround by a cage of laser beams, playing with the notion of protection for invaluable pieces of jewellery. However in this installation we invite visitors to play with the lasers, each of which triggers a different alarm-derived electronic sound that are then repeated in a loop to create a mysterious sound scape.

Is this possibly the coolest LED project in art history? That's what it felt like when I worked on a further development of the Kung Fu weapon idea. Two weeks ago we came together in a London studio and installed the elegant new CLS and a time slice rig of 50 Olympus Pen cameras. I designed a new LED weapon inspired by the car's head lights and two professional Wushu artists performed in the space to create the dynamic 3D light sculptures you can see in the image above.

Mark the date: August 3 will see the release of 'Step Up 3D', the world's first ever dance movie in 3D. I have contributed a very special pair of Creative Recreation trainers covered in flexible LED panels.

The trainers feature integrated motion sensors to create waves of light across the shoes that depend on the movements of the dancers. For now you can see them for about a split second in the movie trailer. I am as curious as you are to see them in action as I have not seen any footage of the actual movie.

I'm on my flight back from Beijing where we have successfully introduced a new generation of weapons to the ancient Chinese art of Wushu Kung Fu. We have worked with British champion Steve Coleman and a team of the world's best Wushu artists to create a show that combined incredible athletic elements with innovative lighting effects to bring this amazing Chinese tradition well and truly into the 21st century. The performance took place during the world premiere of the Maybach 62 as part of the Beijing Motor Show 2010.

My favourite camera at the moment is the beautifully crafted E-P1 and so Olympus kindly invited me to a special event in Berlin this Sunday together with some fellow PEN users. We had the opportunity to try out the entire range of cameras and accessories including the new E-PL1 and some pre-production lenses (a 9-18mm zoom lens). And one of the enthusiastic users brought along a £10K Leica lens with his E-P1 for good measure...

Imogen Heap wears Twitter dress at the Grammys

Say hello to our new creation: after video dresses and laser dresses here is one that connects Imogen to her fans directly via Twitter. When Imogen walked the red carpet to collect her Grammy, fans could send messages and photographs directly to her dress. The messages scrolled across the collar while the images were displayed on her Fendi handbag.

How does it work? The Fendi bag contains an iPod Touch that receives the messages (thanks to Memo Akten for programming this). It displays the pictures and passes the text on to a flexible LED display in the collar.

These are some exclusive images of a new Marcel Wanders installation that we created for the current 'Daydreams' exhibition at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The light sculpture consists of 52 Flos 'Wall Flower' lamps each illuminated by a single full colour LED. The lamps slowly change colour to create constantly moving compositions. The change is deliberately slowed down to give the installation the quality of a time piece. The transformation is only noticeable when viewed in intervals of several minutes. The quality of light emitted by the flowers is mesmerising and enchanting, casting an emotional spell upon the viewer - this effect took us all by surprise during the first test runs of the electronic systems. It's a perfect example of a work of art that is so much more than just the sum of its components.

Hello from Miami, where we are having a great time bringing some cutting edge performance art to Design Miami's temporary gallery space! Together with Silvia Fendi I have designed and customised these Gibson Les Paul guitars and a Grabber bass using Fendi's luxurious materials and hand craft combined with LED illumination and lasers. The lasers turn the guitars into musical paint brushes that create real time graphics on a giant projection.

OKGo are performing every night at 6:30, if you are in town make sure you don't miss this! And to top it all, tonight we have a special guest appearance of Tom Dixon, joining the band and playing the bass.

Last night Rihanna performed at the American Music Award show wearing this futuristic outfit featuring more than 50 lasers. This piece is a collaboration between my studio, Rihanna's styling team and Simon Henwood, who masterminded the entire performance.

While the law makers around the world are busy killing the good old light bulb we are working hard to save this design classic and allow it to be kinder to the environment at the same time. This project was initiated by Alex de Betak, famous for his amazing Paris fashion shows and stylish interiors. He has been using light bulbs in various shapes in quite a few projects in the past and is now looking for the ultimate bulb, combining the classic elegance with modern technology. The images show our first prototypes; fully working LED bulbs that can be screwed into 240V sockets and even dim with standard dimmer circuits.

Wallpaper magazine got in touch a little while ago asking if I would like to design an object under the topic home disco. The resulting design has been published in the current December issue: by day it's a simple white coffee table, by night it becomes a virtual laser dancing cage. It takes a mere second to go from 60s inspired simplicity to an all out SciFi disco fantasy.

To complete the experience there are high fidelity speakers, an iPhone dock and a built-in haze machine.

Finally a moment of calm to post an update on recent projects in the studio: I gave a helping hand in Hector Serrano's installation for Roca at 100% design. The installation features 11 illuminated bowls with a circular video screen at the bottom, which is covered by water. The video can be started and stopped by touching the water. During video playback the water starts to vibrate to create beautiful ripples that interact and distort the video below. The installation was built at 2D3D and we contributed the interactive electronics.

Last night U2 got their new tour under way with a magnificent show at Barcelona's Camp Nou stadium. Every aspect of the show was full of innovative concepts and details, including the stage costumes.

For the encore Bono was dressed in a black leather jacket featuring my latest wearable effects concept: 240 lasers along the silhouette extended Bono's every move all the way across the audience.

Paul Smith and Design Museum director Deyan Sudjic just unveiled a five foot 'rabbit bin' whose ears light up whenever rubbish is deposited in it, as part of the Design Museum Super Contempary Exhibition in Covent Garden. When it comes to light up ears, I'm always happy to help out. In this case the ears are illuminated by an array of amber LEDs that create a simple 'ear' animation whenever an IR sensor senses activity in the bin.

Here are a few images of what must be the design world's most elaborate and technically advanced invitation ever. Each guest received a small mirrored box containing a tiny LED display which scrolled the text of the invitation including the date and location of the private Flos dinner.

At the dinner the guests received the catalogue with a square cut-out in which the mirrored box was held with invisible magnets.

Only 40 of these invitations were ever sent out to a very select group of individuals, which interestingly makes the invitation an even more exclusive and rare object than the Haaa!!! and Hooo!!! lamps themselves...

This morning the Salone del Mobile opened where we show a new jewelry project for the furniture manufacturer Campeggi. "Heartbeat" is a new concept of invisible jewelry that is worn underneath your shirt, hiding the object completely from view. It uses the fabric as a projection surface to create smooth animations and accentuate the fashion of the wearer.

Please drop by stand C15 in exhibition hall 12 to see "Heartbeat" and Campeggi's range of innovative furniture.

Tonight Flos is presenting Philippe Starck's amazing new lamps HOOO!!! and HAAA!!! Featuring hand made crystal by Baccarat, with text by Jenny Holzer I had the honour to add electronic displays to what is probably the most extraordinary collaborative project in design history.

The presentation is as exclusive as the objects themselves: a private dinner for 40 guests at the Flos showroom in Milano.

Finally some pictures of an architecture and interior project that we've been working on for a while: This is a conversion of a typical London Victorian house. It started out as a small one-bedroom flat in the top half of the house.

The roof was extended to add two more bedrooms and a small bathroom. We also removed a wall in the living area to create a larger open space.

And finally the kitchen was completely redesigned to create a more usable space with a custom kitchen installation and a large 200 year old kitchen table. The entire kitchen was created with three main materials: Corian, plywood and Bisazza mosaic. Even though the surface materials are very up-market, the budget for the entire installation was more Ikea sized.

This brings us to a very frequent question: what tech stuff to you have in your own house? We try to keep it as simple as possible: A fibre optic internet connection and Wifi takes care of all data traffic and allows entertainment to run on a MacBook or iPhone. Sound is being catered for by the Tivoli radio in the kitchen or the speaker in the book shelf and that's pretty much it...

iPhone back from the dead!

One of our iPhones went for a diving adventure a few days ago. As you would expect after taking some water on board, it died in my very hands and from past experience with a Sony Ericcson phone this should have been the end of this story.

Well, one shouldn't give up that quickly and after reading about some miracles on the internet there was just one way forward: one hour in the oven at 50 degrees C, then charging the completely empty battery and guess what: the phone made a complete recovery!

This month there are two magazines with stories on my work. Intersection is the coolest car magazine out there and naturally they picked up the joyrider project and there is even a picture of the Polo which suffered great neglect due to the building work in our house. Hopefully it will be back on the road soon.

Wallpaper features a new piece of work called keyhole surgery. The brief for this project was to redesign the game operation. So I thought to create a 3D version of the game but immediately had to think of the new geek sport that is lock picking. There are great similarities in keyhole surgery and lock picking, you need to be very precise in your movements and you can't see what you are actually doing. All of these skills are reflected in the game, where you have to enter the key into a three-dimensional maze without touching the walls. You can study the maze before as a 3D file on your laptop. Every touch is being counted, the person with the smallest number wins!

For this year's 100% Design in Earls Court we've given just a little bit of a helping hand to Hector Serrano's installation at the Roca Stand. Scirocco Studios opened last week in London, showing my first collaboration with Chris O'Shea. The installation was inspired by car tail lights and how they transform photographs taken with long exposure. The projection on the floor showed a race of small invisible cars leaving beautiful red traces around a track inspired by the race track in Oschersleben, Germany. We picked the track purely for aesthetic reasons from a line up of race tracks and were surprised to find that we had chosen the track closest to my home town in East Germany!

The installation had an interactive element: when viewers stepped into the installation, the racers became disoriented trying to avoid the intruders.

I absolutely have to mention last weekend's trip to the wine region along the Unstrut in Germany where I spent a day in the company of this eclectic group of people. What brought us together? We are the last graduates from the special maths school at Martin Luther University Halle, an elite science school founded during the communist East Germany and dismantled after the fall of the wall. I don't know how I got through the interviews to join the school but despite my presence the average IQ in the picture must hover somewhere around the 180 mark. It's interesting to see what the others have been up to; they cover various academic disciplines, legal professions, engineering, computer sciences, business and architecture. We had a great time, sampled the local wine and enjoyed various outdoor activities...

I just returned from Edinburgh where I presented at inter_multi_trans_actions, a conference covering the areas of design that innovate by crossing over into various other territories like architecture, art, engineering and computer science. The speaker line-up was very impressive and included: thePOOCH, Crispin Jones, myself, HeHe, Jason Bruges, Greyworld, The Owl Project, Lucy Bullivant and Bengt Sjolen.

I just returned from the Milano Salone del Mobile which was very unusual for me: no large and complicated show pieces this year. Instead a small but significant project, a piece of jewelry for Flos to mark the start of a new working relationship that will develop new lighting designs in the near future.

The small brooch uses the principle of persistence of vision to recreate the Flos logo in light. When moved the 7 tiny LEDs draw the logo in space, a subtlety that can be discovered unintentionally when glancing past the lights, yet remains hidden when the onlooker focuses onto the brooch.

The design is elegant thanks to its minimalism, using only standard processes from the electronics industry. Even the engineering CAD drawings, usually a domain of trained electronics engineers, show a beautiful graphical clarity.

The limited edition of 500 were given away for free during the presentation of the new Flos Cubo.

Hussein Chalayan’s womenswear collection for Autumn/ Winter 2007 entitled ‘Airborne’ brought the latest LED technology to fashion design. Inspirations as Chalayan articulated, included “the idea of changing seasons, their association with each other and their life and death cycles”. From black and white hooded coats to rose-patterned bronze dresses, the collection also featured some high-tech protective wear described by Chalayan as the “winter relief component”. These included, for a light-sparse winter, a dome-like hat, which emitted a warm red light through a floral pattern and gauze, motorised hoods providing protection from potential chill winds. In contrast and heralding the anticipation of spring, a beautiful white dress, consisting of crystals and 15,600 LEDs flickered with light. The collection demonstrated Chalayan’s ability to combine beautiful and wearable clothes for today with an insight and vision of the future.

After a sneak preview on the Culture Show, the 'joy-rider' project was revealed during last week's ICA fund-raising extravaganza. An exercise in pure minimalism, each light features just two LEDs, one facing each side. The lights are mounted in the spokes of the bike's wheels and paint smiley faces as the wheel rotates. The first prototypes where auctioned during the ICA event and were sold for an incredible £2000!

Below you can see the result of my attempt to create the ultimate design for elegant green London transport; a fusion of vintage and modern elements, coated in the fastest shade of green. It's super light at less than 10kg, features Shimano's finest gear shift and brakes, but most importantly, the pedals are compatible with even the most outrageous designer footwear.

This first prototype was custom built for Silvia, but depending on demand I'm considering a limited edition. Get in touch if you are interested...

This story is already all over the internet thanks to Marcus's quick blogging reflexes, so I should better add it on my own blog: Thursday night saw the premier of my first project in the world of Rock'n Roll: new stage costumes for OK Go! More news from Tokyo: last night's Pecha Kucha event was a great success with a fantastic line up of creative people from all over the world and a very cool after party at SuperDeluxe!

I also took the time to visit the 'space for your future' exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo. It's a beautiful exhibition inside the amazing architectural setting of the MOT museum and it has the most impressive space dedicated to Hussein's video dress!

I just returned from Paris where Hussein Chalayan premiered his new collection. To part with the traditional live catwalk he chose to screen a film shot and produced by the iconic fashion photographer Nick Knight.

Again I was lucky enough to participate in this new collection with a little high tech wizardry, this time in the form of hundreds of servo motor driven lasers. These lasers are integrated in the garments, illuminating the Swarovski crystals and extending the dresses visually into space.

For the last few months I've been part of Thomas Heatherwick's team preparing the bid to build the British pavilion for the Shanghai world expo.
